How freight class works
Freight class is a standardized rating (Classes 50–500) that LTL carriers use to price shipments. It is determined primarily by density — your total weight divided by cubic feet — along with stowability, handling difficulty, and liability. Denser freight gets a lower class and a lower rate. Lighter, bulkier freight gets a higher class and a higher rate.
Why it matters
Getting freight class wrong before booking is one of the most common causes of surprise charges. If a carrier inspects your shipment and finds a different class than what was quoted, they will reclassify it and send an adjusted invoice — often higher, plus a reclassification fee.
